Q: How easy is it to get to Bovec from UK?
A:
There are several budget airlines (e.g. ryanair, easyjet) that fly to a choice of destinations near to Bovev including Trieste (Italy), Klagenfurt (Austria) and Ljubljana (Slovenia). Slightly longer trasnfers from Venice (Italy) and Graz (Austria). You can get there using public transport but this will involve a couple of changes - fortunately taxis in Slovenia are very cheap compared to UK. Driving from the UK is quite do-able, according to
Michelin
it takes about 3.5hours longer than driving to the French alps
.

Q: Is Slovenia safe and friendly?
A:
Our experience is that Slovenia is like the UK was a few decades ago in terms of people leaving their doors open and a general sense of goodwill and community. Our friends bought a house in a Village a few km's from Bovec and they were told they were the first people to ever lock the front door! In a recent poll Ljubljana came out top of the cities most likely to have your mobile phone handed to the police if it got lost. We have found the local neighbours to be extremely friendly and helpful.
Q: How close is the house to the ski lift?
A:
You can walk but we recommend taking the free shuttle bus or drive (if you have a hire car). Our house is 2min walk from the town centre and the ski lift is about 5-10 minute walk (its on the edge of town). Whilst its not far, with all your ski clobber its not much fun. The bus shuttles there and back in the mornings and late afternoons and the car park is free.
Q:
Will I need my own car while I'm there?
A:
The cottage is 2mins walk from all the amenities so you shouldn't need a car. However a car is handy if you want to do some exploring. Slovenia is a small country and near the Austrian and Italian border and there are a number of interesting things to do beyond bovec - as such we recommend having your own car to really appreciate all that is on offer. If you are there just for the local activities on the river and in the mountains, then you won't need a car.
Q: What are the prices like in Slovenia?
A:
At the moment, things are cheap in Slovenia. A big bottle of the local beer in the local bars cost little more than a Euro and you can buy a reasonable lunch on the mountain for a few Euros. The coffee is very good (I'm fussy about my coffee - actually I'm fussy about most things but that's another story) and again they don't rip you off just because you're on the top of a mountain! Eating out is pretty cheap too - lovely pizzas for about €5 - and the wine is good - spend €5 in the supermarket and you'll be picking an 'expensive' one.
Q: How does the skiing/boarding compare to other European resorts?
A:
If you are looking for something on a par with Tignes or Val d'Isere then you will be disappointed. Bovec is a small ski resort. However, it is the highest ski resort in Slovenia and is soon to be linked to the Italian ski resort of Sella Nevea. It also has a good range of runs to suit experienced ski-ers and boarders. There is also a fair bit of off-piste and cross-country but guides are recommended for this for safety reasons. If you want to explore further afield then then there is also skiing in some nearby italian resorts and in Kranjska Gora.
